5 Things You’ll Need for Your Apartment Application

5 Things You’ll Need for Your Apartment Application

When applying to lease an apartment, the rental application is just one of the documents you will need. Along with that, you’ll need a handful of other items to complete your application and verify the information on it.

If you have all of these materials ready as you’re searching for apartments, you’ll be fully prepared to apply as soon as you find a place you like – and that can give you some peace of mind, as well as a better chance of getting your ideal apartment, especially if it’s in high demand!

Here are the 5 items you will need to complete your apartment application:

1. Recent Paystubs or a Bank Statement

Landlords want to verify that you have and/or earn enough money to afford the rent. Typically, they request two recent paystubs to verify your income. If your paystubs are unavailable, a recent bank statement, with the income and earnings lines highlighted, will usually be fine. In general, landlords tend to look for applicants whose monthly earnings are at least three times greater than the cost of rent.

2. Rental History

This will be a list of all of the places you have leased in the past. For each place listed, you will need to include the following information:

• The dates of the lease
• The location of the apartment
• The cost of your monthly rent
• The name and contact information of the landlord
• The reason for leaving.

As part of this aspect of your rental application, you may also be asked to explain if you have ever been evicted from a previous apartment and, if so, why.

3. Driver’s License, Passport, or ID Card

This is required to establish your identity and your legal right to live in the U.S. Some landlords may have stricter requirements about proof of residency documentation, so it never hurts to also keep a copy of a recent utility bill handy, especially if your identification card does not have your most recent address on it.

4. Vehicle Information

If you have a vehicle and will be parking at the new apartment, the landlord may also request information about the make, model, year, color, and license plate number of your vehicle, as well as a copy of the registration and proof of insurance. This is typically required when parking may be limited and landlords need to monitor which vehicles do (and don’t) belong to paying tenants.

5. Checkbook or Credit Card

When submitting your application, you may need to pay an application fee, a credit check fee, and possibly even a background check fee (depending on where you are applying). You may even be asked to put down a deposit if your application is approved immediately. So, make sure you have your checkbook or a credit card available to cover these fees and make the application process go as smoothly as possible!
